What To Look For When Buying A New Food Processor

When you are in the market to by a new food processor, it helps to know a bit more information about what you are about to buy to make sure you choose the right one to meet your needs. It is also worth considering how your needs may change over the next few years because you are likely to be the proud owner of your new food processor for a very long time!

Firstly, it helps to know the difference between a food processor and a food blender. To put it in simple terms, blenders help to liquefy foods whereas food processors help to keep your food in a more solid form. For example, if you wanted to make a milkshake or smoothie, then a blender will break down the ingredients into a liquid form that’s easy to drink.  But a food processor will slice or dice the ingredients, but they will still be easily recognisable.

Food processors are great for neatly slicing food, so if you wanted to create a nice looking salad with sliced cucumbers, tomatoes and boiled eggs, then the machine will come with slicing discs that will make this job easy for you. If you wanted to dice up carrots, potatoes and meat to make a stew or casserole, then you can fit the food processor with the appropriate chopping blade to give you the desired results.

A lot of modern 3-in-1 food-processors come with blender, grinder and juicer attachments so if you wanted to buy a blender and a food processor, then you can save money having to buy two separate machines and instead buy a combined 3-in-1 food-processor.

What size food-processor should I buy?

What you tend to find is that the larger the model of food-processor you buy, the more features they tend to have. So for example, a food processor that can do everything from slicing, dicing, grating, kneading and whipping to grinding and pureeing will take up much more room and have more accessories than one that simply chops up food.

For an average-sized family that will need to use a food-processor every day, a machine with a 2.5-litre capacity should be more than enough.

What attachments are useful?

Most standard food processors will come with a set of basic attachments included. These usually include a grating disc, slicing disc, chopping blade and a dough blade, which are enough to cover most peoples needs.

If you are more of a foodie fan and love experimenting in the kitchen, then you should look out for food-processors that offer extra accessories such as thick and thin slicing and grating discs, spiraliser tool, and if you are into making your own sausages, then you can get one with a sausage-making attachment.

Programme options

A lot of newer food processor models offer set programmes such as kneading and pulsing that you can set and leave running while you go and do another task. This saves you time having to stand over the processor and pulsing by hand.

We hope this guide has helped you with your food-processor choice. Why not take a look at some of our food-processor reviews to get a better idea about different brands and models currently on the market.

How much should I spend on a food processor?

It really depends on few things… Would you use it a lot? Have you got a big family? What is your budget for it? Do you need it just for simple small tasks, like making baby food? Once you answer those questions you would know if you need a mini or normal size food processor. There are many good values for money food processors available. You don’t need to go for expensive ones unless you take things really seriously or have a big family. In those cases high quality and best performing food processor would be the best. The most expensive products use better quality materials and usually last longer when used a lot.
